Raymond C. Gillespie, age 79, of Pottsville, PA passed away Thursday, January 16th, 2014 at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown.

Born in Mechanicsville, PA on April 25, 1934,  he was the son of the late Bernard C. and Clara E. (Yeich) Gillespie.

He graduated from Pottsville High School, Class of 1952.  He then served in the U.S. Marine Corp as a SGT  in the Korean War.

He worked as a railroad mechanic for the Reading Railroad for 20 years and then for Conrail for 6 years until retiring 1996.

He was a member of the St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Pottsville, a life member of the VFW, Post 129 and the AMVETS, Post 180 both in Pottsville.  He volunteered for the Pottsville Midget Football League for 30 years and also did volunteer work for the DAV, driving their vans.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sons: Charles and Raymond Gillespie and a brother James Gillespie.

Ray is survived by  3 sons: Patrick Gillespie and his wife Donna, Pottsville; William Gillespie, Florida; and David Gillespie, Pottsville; 2 granddaughters:  Kelly and Kerry Gillespie; 2 great grandsons:  T.J. and Ethan; 2 brothers:  Bernard Gillespie, New York and William Gillespie, Colorado; a  sister Agnes Purcell, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

Services and interment will be held privately at the convenience of family.

Memorial Donations can be made in memory of Ray to the Pottsville Midget Football League C/O CACU Employees Federal Credit Union, 1800 W. Market St., Pottsville, PA 17901.

The Robert A Evans Jr Funeral Home, 208 Pike St, Port Carbon is in charge of arrangements.

My heart and sympathies go out to the Gillespie Family. As a young boy, I can remember coming your parent's home and seeing Ray, your Mom and your sister Agnes. My Dad loved your family and I am proud to say I know why.
