Mary E. Childs, age 90, of Pottsville, PA passed away Thursday, January 22nd, 2015 at Schuylkill Medical Center, East Norwegian St., Pottsville.

Born in Pottsville, PA on September 10, 1924,  she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Grace (Kane) Childs.

Mary graduated from Port Carbon Soldiers Memorial High School, Class of 1942. She later attended LPN School and then worked for several years at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Pottsville. She served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman First Class in WW II.

Mary was a member of the St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Pottsville and a member of the former Mary Queen of Peace Church in Pottsville, where  she was a member of the choir and the ladies auxillary.

Mary volunteered at the United Cerebral Palsy Agricultural Park. She was a lifetime member of the AMVETS, Post 130 and a member of the Catholic War Vets, Post 1051, both in Pottsville, a member of the Navy Club, Post 157 in Minersville, and a RSVP member. Mary was a Democratic Judge of Elections for 9 years. 

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being preceded in death by her parents,  5 sisters: Margaret Kowalick, Isabel Meros, Catherine Steranko, Dorothy Reading, and Grace Boyer, and 6 brothers: James, Thomas, Robert, Alfred, Francis, and Edward Childs. 

Mary is survived by 2 sons: John Castiglione and his wife Barb, New Ringold and Joseph Castiglione, Rockland, Maine; 3 daughters: Theresa Achenbach and her husband Jim, Pottsville, Joanne Falls and her husband Ralph, Palo Alto, and Michelle Greenwood and her husband Ken, Cape Coral, FL; 4 grandchildren: Ralph Falls III and his wife Carrie; James and Greg Achenbach; and Tami Falls; 4 great-grandchildren: Zachary and Nicholas Falls and Jake and Matt Achenbach; and several nieces and nephews.

A Religious Service will be held at the Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon at 10:30AM on Wednesday, January 28th,  with Deacon Jack Quirk officiating.

Relatives and Friends are invited to a viewing on Wednesday morning from 9-10:30AM at the Funeral Home.

Interment with Military Honors will be held in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hillside SPCA, Hillside Road,  Pottsville, PA 17901 or Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA, 18 Wertz Drive, Pine Grove, PA 17963.

Aunt Mary,


You were a great aunt. I loved visiting your house where you made Mom and I always feel welcomed. Rest in Peace. Heaven now has an angel to keep them laughing. You will be greatly missed.
