Melvia Anne Burke, age 78, of Port Carbon, PA passed away Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016 at West Reading Hospital.

Born in Port Carbon, PA on July 26, 1937, she was the daughter of the late William Leo J. and Eleanor (McCord) Brennan.

Melvia was a graduate of St. Stephen's High School in Port Carbon, Class of 1955.

She worked as a clerk and jewelry designer for W. C. Green's Jewelers and Jay Jewelers both in Pottsville.

Melvia was a member of the St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Port Carbon and a member of the Schuylkill County Law Wive's Association.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Brennan Burke and 2 first cousins, who she grew up with, William H. Hayes and Charles Patterson. 

Melvia is survived by her husband of 56 years, Stanley J. Burke Sr., Port Carbon; 2 sons: William L. J. Burke and his wife Lori, Port Carbon and Stanley J. Burke Jr. and his wife Mary, Pottsville; a daughter Susan E. Miller and her husband Derek, Washington Crossing, PA; 5 grandchildren: Twins Stanley A. Burke and Kathleen S. Burke, both of Pottsville, William L. J. Burke Jr. and Anna C. Burke, both of Port Carbon, and Charlotte Anne Miller, Washington Crossing; and nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at the St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church, Port Carbon at 11AM on Wednesday, March 9th, with Rev. Robert Reiley officiating.

Relatives and Friends are invited to visit with the family Wednesday 10-11AM at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church.

Interment will be held private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Janet Eich's Free Public Library, 111 Pike Street, Port Carbon, PA 17965.

The Robert A Evans Jr Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon is in charge of arrangements.

Dear Stanley and Bill,

I am deeply saddened to learn of your loss of Melvia. My memories of her are mainly from childhood and I recall a pretty lady who always did or said something to make me feel special. I think we can all agree that she was the one who was special.
