George H. Gerstenfeld, age 64, of Pottsville, PA passed away Sunday, August 28th, 2016 at Manorcare Services Pottsville after a long and courageously fought battle in which he never gave up.

Born in Chambersburg, PA on August 18, 1952, he was the son of the late George and Elsa (Eberhardt) Gerstenfeld.

George was a graduate of Pottsville High School, Class of 1970.  He also attended West Chester University. George worked as an IT Analyst and Programmer for H. L. Miller and Son in Port Carbon for over 25 years. Following the closure of H. L. Miller he attended the McCann School of Business in Pottsville, where he became their IT Services Manager and an IT Instructor.

George was an avid golfer and proud father who would take one vacation a year to golf with his daughter.  He was an accomplished musician who played a variety of instruments including trumpet, piano, and both acoustic and electric guitar.  He played many years with L'il Andy's Orchestra and a variety of other local bands.  He was also an avid reader who loved sci-fi and fantasy, amateur gamer, and a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan.

George is survived by his wife Michelle 'Mickey' (Kritak) Gerstenfeld, Pottsville; a daughter, Afra Lynn Gerstenfeld and her husband Thomas Ferguson, Kennesaw, GA; two brothers, John Gerstenfeld and Dr. Louis Gerstenfeld and his wife Dr. Nancy Chapman, all of Canton, MA; and nieces and nephews.  On his wife's side he is survived by sister-in-law Kathryn Kritak of Port Carbon, who helped care for him through his battle, and Susan Whetstone and her husband Jake Whetstone of Schuylkill Haven and nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the Schuylkill Medical Hospitals, Heartland Hospice, Schuylkill Health Home Health, Manor Care, Seton Manor, Dr. Sophy and his office, and Dr. Villareal and his office who supported and helped George honorably fight this battle.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon at 6:30PM on Thursday, September 1st, with Regnal Leibensperger, SALM officiating.

Sending my deepest sympathy to George's family. I knew George as a student many years ago and then again as a colleague at McCann. He was a wonderful person and will be so very missed. I hope you all find comfort in the fond memories you have of him.
