Thomas E. "Chucker" Crochunis, age 81, of Port Carbon, PA passed away after fighting a courageous six-year battle with complications from multiple myeloma on Tuesday, November 21st, 2017 with his loving family by his side at Manor Care Health Services in Pottsville.

 

Born in Schoentown, PA on November 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Joseph and Sophia (Fekette) Crochunis.

 

Tom was a graduate of the Port Carbon Soldiers Memorial High School, Class of 1955. He lettered four years as a pitcher and third baseman on the baseball team and three years as a member of the basketball team in Tabby Howell's Club. Tom pitched for the Port Carbon Barons in the Suburban League. He played a key role in starting the Port Carbon Little League and the youth basketball programs. Tom coached Little League for 22 years, Teener League for two years, and Biddy Basketball for several years.

 

Tom worked as a plant operator for the Pottsville Area Sewer Authority for over 25 years. He was a member of the English Lutheran Church in Minersville. Tom was the Port Carbon Republican Party Committee man for many years and he enjoyed politics, gardening, and sports.

 

Tom was the last member of his immediate family, being preceded in death by his parents, a brother Joseph "Duke" Crochunis, and a sister Anna Mae Cauley.

 

Tom is survived by his wife of 59 years, Laura I. (Blew) Crochunis, Port Carbon; three sons: Thomas Crochunis and his wife Madeline, Shippensburg, PA; Joseph Crochunis and his wife Kathy, Coopersburg, PA; and Michael Crochunis, Port Carbon, PA; two granddaughters: Christine and Catherine; two step-grandchildren: David and Samantha; and a great-granddaughter Kaitlyn.

 

A Religious Service will be held at the Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon at 11AM on Wednesday, November 29th, with Rev. Harold Hand and Pastor David Schreffler officiating.

 

Relatives and Friends are invited to a viewing on Tuesday evening from 6-8PM and Wednesday morning from 10-11AM at the Funeral Home.

 

Interment will be held in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery Port Carbon, PA.

 

Memorial Contributions can be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church 3rd and Arch Streets, Pottsville, PA 17901.
