Deacon John Quirk Obituary

It is with great sorrow that the family of Deacon Jack Quirk announce his passing. Jack was born November 21, 1940 to John F. Quirk and Alice R. (Reddington) Quirk. He was a resident of the Greenwood Hill area all his life, where he attended the local public schools. He then went on to Nativity B.V.M. High School. He was in the first class to go four years graduating in 1959. He enjoyed his time at Nativity, where he served as the Drum Major for the High School Band and also participated in the school plays. He continued his friendship with his classmates attending the reunions and most recently monthly luncheons at the Stadium. After graduation he went to work for Miles Shoe Store in Pottsville and later managed the Triangle Shoe Store. It was then that he met the love of his life, Jean. They spent 61 years of wedded bliss together loving one another, holding hands to the very end. Jack continued his career working for the city of Pottsville as the City Clerk and was very involved in Democratic politics for many years, running for Mayor of the city in 1977. He ended his career working for the Commonwealth of PA with the Auditor General's office, retiring after 25 years. Jack had always been involved with the church of St. Patrick and in 2000 was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Allentown. He was assigned to St. Patrick's, where he served for almost 24 years assisting at funerals, serving Mass, visiting the sick and his most favorite, training new altar servers. Jack had a very kind heart and would help everyone that was in need or first to offer them some kindness. He and his wife Jean held a very special place in their hearts for the Tray family. All Jack had to do was ask and they would be there to help. Jack leaves to survive him, his wife Jean, daughter Lisa and son Shawn (Rose Ann), Kimberly; four grandchildren: Rebecca (Tom) Jacqueline, Shauna (Dan) and Dylan; great-grandchildren: Lily, Adalyn, Thalya Jean and Levi; sister Alice, brother: Bob (Mary); brother and sister in law: Rick (Kathy); and many nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his parents, brothers: Frank (Jeannie) and Joe (Fran), sisters: Katherine and Mary Catherine, and grandson Jeremy John Costy, Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday January 26th at 11AM at the Church of St. Patrick in Pottsville.
