Edward Chernes Obituary

Edward Chernes, affectionately known as “Cherney”, 81, peacefully gained his wings on Saturday, January 6th, 2024, at Geisinger St. Luke's Hospital, Orwigsburg Campus, surrounded by his loving family.  Born in Silver Creek, PA, on April 30, 1942, Ed was the son of the late Martha Chernes and grandson of Willie & Nellie Chernes.

Ed’s life was marked by love, laughter, and a commitment to family. He graduated from Blythe Township High School in 1960 and went on to have a successful career as a welder and steelworker at DANA Corp in Reading. However, his proudest accomplishment was his family.

In 1963, Ed married the love of his life, Beverly Anne (Maige), and together they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. Their union was blessed with two children, Amy and Jeff, and a cherished granddaughter, Lainey, affectionately known as "Birdie." His family brought him immeasurable joy, laughter, and love, and his devotion to "Birdie" knew no bounds.

Ed embraced life with a passion for various interests. He enjoyed playing golf with his son, Jeff, singing, playing the guitar, and expressing his creativity through painting, drawing and woodworking. Ed found solace in taking care of his yard when the weather warmed and he loved his trips to the beach every summer.  Ed was an avid Phillies and Redskin fan.  Always a kind word and a smile, “Be Good” or “I Love You, Ya Know” and never a goodbye.  His three fur grandbabies, Lilly, Rosie, and Willie, will miss his kind heart, gentle hand, and the occasional dropped crumbs.

A man of faith, Ed was a former member of St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Port Carbon, where he worked as the school maintainence for nearly a decade. In recent years, he became a member of St. Clare of Assisi Church in St. Clair.  He was a U.S. Army Reservist and a long time member of the American Legion Post 38, Schuylkill Haven.

Ed is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Anne (Maige) Chernes; devoted son, Jeffrey Chernes; beloved daughter, Amy Dusel, and her husband Robert Jr.; adored granddaughter, Lainey "Birdie" Dusel;  brother-in-law, Edward Maige;  niece and nephew, Marisa and Buddy Maige; great-nephew, Theo.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha, and in-laws, Edward and Rosalie Maige.

The Chernes family invites friends and loved ones to join them for a celebration of Ed's life, details of which will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to SPCA & Guide Dogs for the Blind in Cherney’s memory.
