Giovanni "John" Mercuri, aged 88, of Pottsville, PA, peacefully passed away on Friday, January
19th, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Platania, Italy, on May 30, 1935, he
was the son of the late Domenico and Antonia (Giardino) Mercuri.
John was a fixer. He had a profound way of making things better, starting first with his own life
when he immigrated to the United States at the age of 6. John's extraordinary journey is marked
by his leadership, impactful contributions to the community, and the way that he made people
feel. This journey included dedicated service in the USMC from 1953 to 1956 in Korea and
Japan. His professional legacy began at RCA, where he served as a computer tech for the
space program, and later extended to the United States Postal Service, where he served as a
supervisor and postmaster for 25 years.
An accomplished entrepreneur, John proudly owned the Mercuri Carwash and The Hotel Davis.
He was a devout member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Pottsville and a former
member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. John held leadership roles as the past
President of the American Postal Union and was a lifetime member of the American Legion, the
DAV, and the AMVETS—all in Pottsville.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Mercuri, a grandson,
Albert Yackenchick Jr., sisters Maria Mercuri, Caroline Doyne, and a brother, Natale Mercuri.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Maria Mercuri, Pottsville. Together, they
created an enduring legacy of love and commitment, evident in their children: Domenic Mercuri
and his wife Taylor of Pottsville, and John C. Mercuri and his wife Anne, also of Pottsville;
Annetta Yackenchick and her husband Albert of Schuylkill Haven; and a daughter-in-law,
JoAnne Mercuri, of Pottsville.
Affectionately known as "Papa," John leaves behind 20 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren: Domenic, Antonio, John, Francesco, Maria, Elizabeth, Rachel, Katherine,
Alicia, Jonathan, Mike, Nicholas, Marissa, Mallory, Anthony, Nathan, Madeline, Ryan, Noah, and
Leonardo; great-grandchildren: Emma, Lucy, John, Matthew, Gianna, Icarus, Sparrow, Aviana,
Sophia, Camilla, and Gabriella. Additionally, he is survived by a sister-in-law, Theresa Mercuri,
of Schuylkill Haven; brother-in-law Albino Mercuri and his wife Ivana, of Pottsville, and many
beloved nieces and nephews.
His benevolence, resilience, and unwavering authenticity serve as a guiding light for all those
fortunate enough to have known him. A Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Rev. Edward
Connolly, will be celebrated at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Pottsville. Relatives and
friends are invited to a viewing on Tuesday morning from 9-11 AM followed by the mass.
Interment with Military Honors will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery in Pottsville. The Robert A
Evans Jr. Funeral Home in Port Carbon is overseeing arrangements. Please convey
