Shirley Smerlick, 88 longtime former Palo Alto resident passed away Sunday July 9, 2023 at LVH-Schuylkill Hospital. Born March 27, 1935 she was the daughter of the late John and Helen Penkunas Yurcikonis. Shirley attended Pottsville High School, and then joined the ILGWU at various garment factories as a sorter. She was a lifetime member of the former St. Stephen's R.C. Church, Port Carbon. Shirley was married to Charles J. Smerlick Jr., who preceded her in death on October 1, 2008 after 52 years of marriage. She was an avid Bingo player and loving grandmother.
Shirley was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Jean, Bertha, Anna, and brothers Edward, Winfield, Albert, and Leonard, a grandson Robert Brown, daughter in law Tracy Smerlick.

14 great-grandchildren, Tessa, Taya, Cameron, Kylie, Shawn, Kasper, Liam, Hunter, Alexis, Matthew, Anthony, Bella, Weston and Ava;
7 great great grandchildren Jamison, Grayson, Lillian, Caspian, Paisley, Hudson, and Theodore
as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Saturday July 15, at the Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 10:30am until the time of service. Interment will be private. For more information please visit Robertavansjrfh.com
