William (Bill) Lee Guers, 69, of Pottsville passed away suddenly Tuesday, January 25th, surrounded with family by his side at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. He was born July 7, 1952 in Pottsville.
He was survived by his wife of 49 years, Marion Guers, his daughter, Pamela Palko and her husband Joseph, Pottsville; his son, Scott Guers and his wife Katie, Corwall, NY; and his four loving grandchildren who adored him: Logan, Joey, Brooke, and Hunter. Bill was one of four siblings; Louise Kalymun, Kristina Guers, and his late brother and best friend, Charles Guers, who preceded him in death in 2004.
Bill was a 1970 graduate of Pottsville Area High School and completed his Associates Degree in Diesel Mechanics in 1972 at Williamsport Area Community College. For 25 years he worked with his father in developing a topsoil and mulch business.
In 1997, he took ownership of the business with his brother and dedicated his life to the successful operation of their business, Guers Topsoil & Mulch Products, Inc. After Charlie’s passing in 2004, Bill and his wife continued to expand the business into the only self-producing mulch company in Schuylkill County. After twenty-two years of devoting his life to the thriving business, Bill sold it in 2019. The business gained a new name, Guers Topsoil & Much Products LLC, and Bill enjoyed transitioning from owner into employee, spending the past two years working with the new company. He loved to work whether it was operating a loader/excavator or driving a truck.
Bill was a lifetime member of the Good Will Fire Company No. 1, Port Carbon. He also served his community as Port Carbon Councilman and council member and council president of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed his retirement traveling with Marion and he took joy in helping her cook by rolling dough for pot-pie, stirring fudge, and cutting up vegetables for soup. He loved watching his grandchildren at sporting events and teaching them how to drive for the first time as well as how to operate loaders and excavators. His life lessons and values will live on.
A Religious Service will be held at the Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home in Port Carbon at 10AM on Saturday, January 29th, with Pastor Lois Sterling officiating.
Relatives and Friends are invited to a viewing on Friday evening from 6-8PM and Saturday morning from 9-10AM at the Funeral Home.
